Company history
BHP has continued to grow because it is the UK leader in an increasingly important niche: BHP enables its clients to acquire, retain and develop SME customers, through intelligent use of business content.
The 26-strong company, set up in 1991, has built a strong list of loyal, renewing customers — more than 230 organisations, including 85 websites, use its publications and services. Customers include:
- 25 leading companies such as Microsoft, HSBC, Yell and Volkswagen. Many use BHP Information Solutions material as the backbone of their websites' business content.
- Government and government agency customers — ranging from the Small Business Service and the Patent Office to learndirect and the British Standards Institution — which take off-the-shelf titles such as Directors’ Briefing and tailored material. Two examples of bespoke publishing are The No-Nonsense Guide to Government rules and regulations for setting up your business (commissioned by the DTI, launched by Patricia Hewitt, and with over 150,000 copies in national circulation) and the 80-page handbook Start Your Own Business in Thanet, produced for Business Link Kent as part of a major economic regeneration project funded by the South East England Development Agency and the European Regional Development Fund.
- All 43 Business Link Operators, including 34 Business Link websites.
- All three national business support organisations in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland hold licences for BHP Information Solutions material. Editorial staff work with these organisations to adapt and tailor material to the laws and circumstances of the different parts of the United Kingdom.
- Trade and professional-organisation customers — from the IoD and FSB to the ICAEW and the IBA.
BHP Information Solutions has 14 years’ experience of supplying concise, action-led business advice for UK start-ups and SMEs. A highly developed editorial process ensures both the quality and relevance of new material and a culture attuned to working with external business organisations.
