David Impey, BHP legal editor, recalls: “One of our clients, the Intellectual Property Office [IPO], asked us to design, write and develop an online, interactive diagnostic tool to encourage business owners and managers to adopt a more proactive approach to using intellectual property [IP] as a way to gain competitive advantage and become more competitive.”

The result of BHP’s work is the IP Health Check, an online tool that consists of linked interactive questionnaires that help artists, inventors, sole traders and SMEs identify, protect and commercially exploit their IP more effectively.

“Very quickly, users can complete the IP Health Check”, David adds. “They must answer a few easy questions on the IP topic of their choice and they then receive a customised confidential report.”

Time for action

The report includes a list and explanation of recommended action points, as well as guidance on implementation and links to further information and resources.

“The Intellectual Property Office was delighted with the solution we provided,” remarks David. “Many businesses throughout the country have used the diagnostic and many have experienced the benefits of using intellectual property to its full potential.”
