Macclesfield Chamber of Commerce, one of primary sources of start-up information and advice for entrepreneurs in East Cheshire, needed a comprehensive, all-in-one resource to provide ‘pre-starts’ with guidance they could rely upon.

BHP’s Start Up Your Own Business, a publication that has been used widely by business support organisations in southern England, was the perfect, readymade solution.

BHP account manager Martin Read reveals: “In clear and accessible language, the 80-page publication, which is based on BHP’s market leading Start-up Briefing series, answers all the key questions someone thinking of starting a business needs to know.

“Various case studies also provide insight into managing issues facing those setting up a business, including market research, writing a business plan, pricing, finance, sales and marketing.”

No-cost solution 

BHP was able to provide a no-cost solution, too. Martin explains: “The chamber paid for the guide by selling advertising to local firms, which rather than having a negative impact, boosted the local feel of the guide and gave existing local businesses the chance to introduce themselves to potential customers.”

The publication continues to inform new entrepreneurs in the Macclesfield area. “The guide has played a very important role in supporting new businesses,” Martin adds.

“Research has shown that one-third of people who use the guide go on to set up their own business, which is quite incredible. It also underlines the important role the chamber is playing in encouraging the creation of new businesses in east Cheshire and how our solution enables such organisations to reach their targets.”
